Overview

Phlegm clouds the orifices of the Heart. Yin-type blockage is quiet and collapsed; Yang-type is restless.

Differentiate from

  • Phlegm-Fire (heat, mania, yellow coat)
  • Heart Blood Deficiency (clear mind, pale thin tongue, insomnia)

Etiology

Spleen Phlegm rising; after Wind-stroke; severe emotional shock; damp climate plus weak Spleen.

Treatment Principle

Open the orifices; transform Phlegm; revive consciousness in acute cases.

Representative formulas. Di Tan Tang; Su He Xiang Wan (Yin/cold blockage); Zhi Bao Dan or An Gong Niu Huang Wan for Yang/heat blockage — prescription patent; Niu Huang is restricted in many jurisdictions; use only certified or artificial bezoar products, never unregulated wildlife sources.
