Overview

Insufficient Blood to nourish the body, mind, and sinews. Parent of Heart Blood xu and Liver Blood xu.

Differentiate from

  • Yin Deficiency (red peeled tongue, night sweats, five-center heat)
  • Yang Deficiency (cold, wet tongue)
  • Blood Stasis (purple, fixed pain)

Etiology

Blood loss, Spleen not producing Blood, chronic illness, inadequate diet, prolonged breastfeeding.

Treatment Principle

Nourish Blood; strengthen the Spleen; settle the spirit if the Heart is involved.

Representative formulas. Si Wu Tang; Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang; Gui Pi Tang when Heart and Spleen are both weak.

Representative points. BL-17, BL-20, SP-6, ST-36, REN-4, LIV-8, HT-7.
