Overview

Blood is not circulating. Pain is fixed. Color darkens. Masses form.

Differentiate from

Qi Stagnation (moving distension, no purple)
Blood Deficiency (pale thin tongue, no fixed stabbing)
Cold-Bi (weather-linked joint pain without systemic purple signs)

Etiology

Qi stagnation that has gone on too long; Qi xu failing to move Blood; Cold congealing; Heat baking Blood dry; trauma; lingering lochia.

Pathomechanism

Blood fails to move and stagnates, obstructing the channels.

Treatment Principle

Invigorate Blood; dispel stasis; move Qi so Blood can follow.

Representative formulas. Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (chest/head); Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang (below the diaphragm); Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang (lower abdomen); Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang (channels); Tao Hong Si Wu Tang when Blood is also xu.

Representative points. SP-10, BL-17, SP-6, LIV-3, LI-4, local ashi.
