Overview

For a lay person:

A subarachnoid haemorrhage is bleeding into the space around the brain, usually from a burst aneurysm. It causes a sudden, extremely severe headache and is a medical emergency.

For a trained medical person:

Most are aneurysmal. Diagnosis by CT, then lumbar puncture if needed, and CT angiography. Management: aneurysm securing (coiling or clipping), nimodipine, and neurocritical care. Chinese medicine has no role in the acute phase.

In Chinese medicine:

Flaws and Sionneau's textbook differentiates this condition into these patterns: Phlegm-Heat; Blood Stasis; Liver Fire Blazing; Stomach Fire. Treatment follows the pattern a patient presents with, not the Western diagnosis alone.

When to get help: Call emergency services immediately for a sudden severe headache.
