Traditional Chinese Uses

Ge Gen (kudzu root) is a cool, sweet-pungent herb used to release the Exterior, generate fluids, and raise Spleen Qi. It is particularly effective for Wind-Cold or Wind-Heat patterns where fever accompanies stiffness and tension of the upper back and neck. It generates fluids to relieve Stomach Heat thirst, and its ascending quality is used to raise clear Yang and treat diarrhea from Spleen deficiency. Ge Gen also relaxes muscle tension and is a classical herb for hypertension and cervical spine conditions.

Botanical Description

Pueraria montana is a fast-growing, deciduous, woody vine in the pea family (Fabaceae), climbing or trailing up to 30 m. Stems are thick and densely hairy. Leaves are large, trifoliate with broadly ovate leaflets 8-20 cm long, often lobed, and covered in fine hairs. Fragrant, pea-like, purple-red flowers are borne in erect racemes 10-30 cm long. Pods are hairy and flat. The tuberous root can grow to enormous size (several meters long and over 100 kg) and contains high concentrations of isoflavones and starch.

Habitat:

Forest margins, hillsides, roadsides, and scrubland; native to eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea), invasively naturalized across the southeastern United States and other regions.

Conservation Notes:

Pueraria montana is extremely vigorous and is considered one of the most problematic invasive plants in the southeastern United States. It is abundant throughout its native East Asian range. No conservation concerns; concern is rather about its invasive spread.

Active Constituents

Puerarin (daidzein-8-C-glucoside)

Isoflavone C-glycoside

Concentration: Major marker; ~1-5% of the root (Chinese Pharmacopoeia requires >=2.4%)

The signature and most abundant isoflavonoid of Ge Gen. Produces coronary and cerebral vasodilation, improves microcirculation, reduces myocardial oxygen demand, and shows neuroprotective and antioxidant effects. Puerarin is the constituent linked to reduced alcohol intake and to Ge Gen's traditional action of relaxing the muscles of the neck and back.

Daidzin

Isoflavone O-glycoside

Concentration: Minor to moderate

An inhibitor of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2); implicated in the anti-dipsotropic (alcohol-intake-lowering) activity of kudzu preparations.

Daidzein

Isoflavone aglycone

Concentration: Minor

A phytoestrogen with antioxidant, antispasmodic and mild vasodilatory activity; the aglycone counterpart of puerarin/daidzin.

Genistein

Isoflavone aglycone

Concentration: Trace to minor

A phytoestrogenic isoflavone with tyrosine-kinase-inhibiting, antioxidant and antiproliferative activity.

Formononetin

Methoxylated isoflavone

Concentration: Trace to minor

An isoflavone with estrogenic and vasorelaxant activity contributing to the cardiovascular effects of the root.

Kudzusaponins / soyasaponins

Triterpenoid (oleanane) saponins

Concentration: Variable

Triterpene saponins with antioxidant, hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory activity.

Starch (Ge Gen fen)

Concentration: High in the fresh/cultivated root (often >10%)

The abundant starch fraction underlies the traditional fluid-generating, thirst-quenching and Spleen-Yang-raising (anti-diarrheal) uses of the root and its food-grade kudzu-starch preparations.

⚠ Drug Interactions

Antidiabetic drugs (insulin, sulfonylureas, metformin)

Moderate Evidence: Theoretical

Puerarin and other isoflavones lower blood glucose and improve insulin sensitivity in preclinical and small clinical studies, which may add to the effect of glucose-lowering drugs.

Clinical note: Monitor blood glucose when combined; watch for hypoglycemic symptoms.

Antihypertensive and nitrate anti-anginal drugs

Moderate Evidence: Theoretical

Puerarin causes vasodilation and lowers blood pressure; combined with antihypertensives or nitrates this may enhance blood-pressure-lowering effects (though puerarin is also used clinically alongside them for angina).

Clinical note: Monitor blood pressure; adjust as needed.

Estrogen therapy / tamoxifen and hormone-sensitive conditions

Minor Evidence: Theoretical

The isoflavones daidzein, genistein and formononetin bind estrogen receptors and may theoretically add to, or compete with, estrogenic drugs.

Clinical note: Use caution in estrogen-sensitive conditions; clinical significance is uncertain.

Antiplatelet / anticoagulant drugs

Minor Evidence: Theoretical

Puerarin has antiplatelet and antithrombotic activity in vitro and may theoretically add to the effect of aspirin, clopidogrel or warfarin.

Clinical note: Monitor for bleeding if combined; evidence in humans is limited.

Preparation Methods

Raw Ge Gen decoction

Parts: dried root

Typical dose 9-15 g (up to 30 g) decocted in water. The raw root is preferred for releasing the muscles (especially neck/upper-back stiffness), clearing heat, generating fluids to relieve thirst, and venting measles rashes.

Dry/bran-fried Ge Gen (wei ge gen)

Parts: root roasted or stir-fried with bran

Roasting moistens and moderates the cooling, upward-venting quality and strengthens the Spleen-Yang-raising, diarrhea-arresting action; this processed form is chosen for damp/spleen-deficiency diarrhea.

Kudzu starch (Ge Gen fen)

Parts: starch extracted from the root

The powdered root starch is dissolved in hot water as a food-grade preparation to generate fluids, relieve thirst and soothe the stomach; it is a common dietary form of the herb.

Clinical Studies

The isoflavone puerarin reduces alcohol intake in heavy drinkers: a pilot study

Penetar DM, Toto LH, Farmer SL, et al. (2012) Drug and Alcohol Dependence Double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot trial

Ten heavy drinkers received purified puerarin (1200 mg/day) or placebo for one week before a laboratory drinking session. Puerarin significantly reduced the number of beers consumed (mean 2.4 vs 3.5 on placebo) and slowed drinking pace, without altering the urge to drink, supporting an isoflavone-specific anti-drinking effect.

An extract of the Chinese herbal root kudzu reduces alcohol drinking by heavy drinkers in a naturalistic setting

Following 7 days of standardized kudzu (Pueraria) extract or placebo, heavy drinkers consumed significantly fewer beers during a 1.5-hour naturalistic drinking session, with more sips, smaller sip volumes and longer time per beer, and no reported side effects.
