Overview

For a lay person:

Irritable bowel syndrome is a common long-term condition of the gut that causes cramping, bloating and diarrhoea, constipation or both. It does not damage the bowel but can be very troublesome.

For a trained medical person:

A disorder of gut-brain interaction diagnosed by Rome IV criteria after excluding alarm features. Management includes diet (including low-FODMAP), fibre, antispasmodics, laxatives or antidiarrhoeals, neuromodulators and psychological therapy.

In Chinese medicine:

Flaws and Sionneau's textbook differentiates this condition as one pattern: Liver-Spleen Disharmony. Treatment follows the pattern a patient presents with, not the Western diagnosis alone.

When to get help: See a doctor for weight loss, rectal bleeding, symptoms starting after 50, or night-time diarrhoea.
