Location

On the back, on the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of T6.

How to locate: With the patient prone, find the spinous process of T7, level with the inferior angles of the scapulae when the arms hang at the sides; the point is in the depression one spinous process higher, just below T6.

Regional anatomy: Beneath the skin and subcutaneous tissue the needle passes through the supraspinous and interspinous ligaments toward the ligamentum flavum; the spinal canal and cord lie beyond it.
