Treatment Principle

Nourish yin and reduce deficiency fire with reinforcing technique, mainly at Kidney points.

Indications

gradual onset with no fever or only low feverintermittent sore, dry throat, worse at nighthot palms and solesred tongue without coatingthready, rapid pulse

Method

Reinforcing technique. Alternate this prescription with the KI6 and LU7 pair.

⚠ Cautions

A sore throat or hoarseness lasting more than three weeks, especially in smokers, or with difficulty swallowing, weight loss or a neck lump, needs ENT investigation to exclude malignancy.

About

The first of two alternating college prescriptions for chronic (deficiency-type) sore throat, from deficiency fire flaring because kidney yin is insufficient.

Rationale

The Kidney channel runs up to the throat, so KI3 can nourish yin where it is lacking. LU10, the spring point of the Lung, cools the throat from the lung side; the book presents the pair as nourishing yin and bringing down fire.

Clinical Notes

The book directs that this pair and the KI6 and LU7 pair be used in alternation. It says the section covers acute tonsillitis and acute and chronic pharyngitis.
