Traditional Chinese Uses

Si Gua Luo (luffa sponge, dried luffa fruit interior) is a neutral herb with a light, open texture that reflects its action in Chinese medicine: it opens the channels and collaterals, resolves Phlegm, and moves Blood and Qi through obstructed areas. It is used for joint pain and muscle stiffness from Wind-Damp, Phlegm accumulation with chest tightness, and insufficient lactation from obstructed breast channels. Its channel-opening quality also extends to conditions where Phlegm and Blood obstruct the normal flow of Qi throughout the body.

Botanical Description

Luffa cylindrica (also known as Luffa aegyptiaca), commonly known as sponge gourd, vegetable sponge, smooth loofah or by its Chinese name Si Gua Luo, is a vigorous annual climbing vine in the family Cucurbitaceae of pantropical cultivation, probably originating in tropical Asia. It produces long, ribbed, herbaceous stems that climb by branched tendrils and may reach 10 m or more in a single growing season. The leaves are large, palmately five- to seven-lobed, rough to the touch and alternately arranged. The plant is monoecious, with bright yellow, five-petalled flowers; staminate flowers are borne in axillary racemes, while pistillate flowers are solitary. The fruit is an elongate, cylindrical, smooth-skinned gourd up to 60 cm long that is eaten as a vegetable when young. As the fruit matures and dries on the vine, the flesh disintegrates to leave a tough, fibrous vascular skeleton enclosing the seeds; this dried, fibrous network is the familiar luffa sponge and is also the part used medicinally in traditional Chinese medicine as Si Gua Luo.

Hemicellulosic polysaccharides

Concentration: Major cell-wall fraction

Xylan, mannan and galactan-type hemicelluloses accompany cellulose in the fruit fibre. These polysaccharides contribute the bulk of the water-extractable material of the crude drug.

Lignin

Phenylpropanoid polymer

Concentration: Secondary structural fraction

Provides rigidity to the vascular bundles. Contributes to the insoluble matrix and is largely pharmacologically inert.

Saponins (including cucurbitacin-type triterpenes)

Triterpenoid saponins

Concentration: Minor; total cucurbitacins ~3.9% reported in Luffa fruit

Triterpenoid saponins and cucurbitacins from the Luffa fruit show anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic activity in extract studies and may underlie the swelling-reducing and pain-relieving effects attributed to the herb.

Flavonoids reported across Luffa cylindrica tissues provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in extract assays.

Preparation Methods

Decoction

Parts: dried fibrous vascular bundle of the mature fruit

Decoct 4.5-9 g (up to 15 g) in water. Used to free the channels and collaterals for wind-damp painful obstruction (bi syndrome) with stiff, painful joints and sinews, to invigorate blood, resolve phlegm in the collaterals, and to promote lactation in insufficient milk with breast distension.

Charred (Si Gua Luo Tan)

Parts: dried fibrous vascular bundle of the mature fruit

Stir-fried until charred to enhance the ability to stop bleeding; used for various bleeding patterns while retaining its collateral-freeing action.

Topical / external wash

Parts: dried fibrous vascular bundle of the mature fruit

The fibre is decocted for external washes, or charred and powdered, for sores, swellings and skin conditions to resolve toxicity and reduce swelling.

Ming Dynasty, 1596 (Li Shizhen)
Records the sponge gourd (si gua) and its dried fibrous network, describing use to free the channels, invigorate blood and resolve toxicity; loofah entered Chinese use around the Song dynasty.

Ben Cao Zai Xin (Materia Medica Renewed)

Qing Dynasty
Notes the fibrous vascular bundle (Si Gua Luo) for freeing the collaterals in painful obstruction and for promoting the flow of milk.
