☯ TCM Properties
Tonifies the Kidneys and Strengthens the Lower Back; Warms the Lungs and calms wheezing; Moistens the Intestines and Unblocks the Bowels; Aids the Kidneys in Grasping Qi; Tonifies Kidney Essence
Traditional Chinese Uses
Hu Tao Ren (walnut kernel) is a warm, sweet, oily herb used in Chinese medicine to tonify Kidney Yang, strengthen the lower back and bones, calm wheezing from Kidney failing to grasp Lung Qi, and moisten the Intestines to relieve constipation. As one of the gentlest Yang-tonifying herbs, it is appropriate for long-term daily use as a food-herb, particularly in elderly patients with Kidney Yang deficiency, chronic cough, and constipation from dryness. Its pleasant taste and food-safe character make it one of the most accessible Kidney tonics.
Western Herbalism Properties
Botanical Description
Juglans regia is a long-lived deciduous tree in the Juglandaceae family reaching 25-35 m tall with a broad spreading crown and smooth grey bark that becomes deeply furrowed with age. It is native to a broad arc from the Balkans through Central Asia to the western Himalayas and southwestern China and is cultivated worldwide for its edible kernels. The leaves are pinnately compound, 25-40 cm long, with 5-9 large aromatic ovate leaflets that release a characteristic resinous scent when crushed. The tree is monoecious, with pendant male catkins and small inconspicuous terminal female flowers borne in spring. The fruit is a drupe-like nut: a green fleshy husk surrounds a hard wrinkled bony shell enclosing the convoluted two-lobed edible seed (the walnut kernel) used as Hu Tao Ren in Chinese medicine.
Active Constituents
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid, linoleic acid)
Fatty acid (fixed oil)Concentration: Kernel is roughly 60-70% oil, rich in omega-3 ALA and omega-6 linoleic acid
The plant-source omega-3 (ALA) and omega-6 fatty acids underlie walnut's lipid-lowering and cardiovascular benefits, reducing total and LDL cholesterol.
Ellagitannins and phenolic acids
Polyphenol (tannin)Concentration: Concentrated in the pellicle/skin of the kernel
Ellagitannins are metabolized by gut microbiota to urolithins; they provide strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
Tocopherols (vitamin E, esp. gamma-tocopherol)
TocopherolConcentration: Notable in the oil
Lipid-soluble antioxidants that protect the polyunsaturated oil from oxidation and contribute to vascular protection.
Phytosterols (beta-sitosterol)
PhytosterolConcentration: Present in the oil
Compete with dietary cholesterol for absorption, contributing to cholesterol-lowering effects.
Arginine and protein
Amino acid / proteinConcentration: Kernel ~15% protein, arginine-rich
Arginine is a precursor of nitric oxide, supporting endothelial function and vascular health.
Melatonin
IndoleamineConcentration: Trace
Antioxidant and sleep-regulating indoleamine present in small amounts, contributing to the total antioxidant capacity of the kernel.
Juglone
NaphthoquinoneConcentration: Trace in kernel (higher in green husk and leaf)
A naphthoquinone with antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity, mainly relevant to the husk and hull rather than the edible seed.
⚠ Drug Interactions
Iron supplements and mineral supplements (oral)
Tannins/phenolics and phytates in the kernel and pellicle can chelate iron and other divalent minerals in the gut, reducing their absorption.
Clinical note: Space large medicinal doses of walnut or walnut-hull products at least 2 hours away from oral iron or mineral supplements.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
No direct pharmacokinetic interaction is established; however, large shifts in nut/fat and micronutrient intake can affect dietary consistency relevant to warfarin management.
Clinical note: Maintain a consistent intake and discuss major dietary changes with the prescriber; routine culinary amounts are not expected to alter INR.
Dosage
| Form | Amount | Frequency | Duration | Population | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| decoction | 9-30g | Daily | — | — | — |
Preparation Methods
Decoction (water extraction)
Parts: Ripe seed / kernel
Typically 9-30 g of walnut kernel decocted, used to warm and tonify the Kidneys and Lungs and to moisten the intestines. Often the thin brown skin is retained when the astringent, Kidney-securing action is desired.
Direct ingestion / paste
Parts: Ripe seed / kernel
Kernels eaten directly or ground into a paste, sometimes dry-fried or combined with honey, for chronic cough, wheezing, constipation from dryness and lower-back weakness.
Clinical Studies
The Effect of Walnut Intake on Lipids: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials finding that walnut-supplemented diets significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides compared with control diets, supporting a cardioprotective lipid effect of the seed.
Effects of a hydroalcoholic extract of Juglans regia (walnut) leaves on blood glucose and major cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetic patients: a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial
Randomized placebo-controlled trial in type 2 diabetic patients showing that Juglans regia leaf extract improved fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and some cardiovascular risk factors. (Note: this trial used walnut leaf, a related part, rather than the seed Hu Tao Ren.)
