Traditional Chinese Uses
Hu Po (amber) is a cool, sweet substance used to calm the Shen, settle palpitations, and anchor Yang. It is indicated for anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and palpitations from various causes. Its Blood-activating and stasis-dispersing properties extend to amenorrhea, blood-stasis abdominal masses, and traumatic injuries. It also promotes urination and relieves urinary discomfort from stagnation. Ground into powder and used in small doses, it is traditionally added to formulas without being decocted.
Botanical Description
Hu Po is amber, the fossilized resin of ancient coniferous trees — in the Chinese tradition principally attributed to the extinct pine Pinus succinifera and related Cenozoic conifers, though geologically the substance encompasses a range of fossil resins from many gymnosperm taxa. Living trees of the parent species exuded sticky terpenoid resin in response to wounding; over tens of millions of years buried under sediment, the volatile fractions evaporated and the residual polymerized resin underwent slow crosslinking and oxidation, hardening into a lustrous yellow to reddish-brown amorphous solid (succinite) with a Mohs hardness of 2–2.5 that develops a static charge when rubbed. Pieces are mined from Cretaceous to Miocene deposits in the Baltic, Myanmar, Fushun (China), and Dominican Republic, then sorted, cleaned, and ground to a fine powder for medicinal use. In traditional Chinese medicine amber is sweet and neutral, calming the spirit for palpitations, insomnia, and convulsions, invigorating blood to dissipate masses, and promoting urination to relieve painful urinary dribbling.
Active Constituents
Succinic acid (butanedioic acid)

The signature acid of amber, released on distillation or pyrolysis. In rodent studies succinic acid produces central nervous system depressant effects, reducing spontaneous motor activity, prolonging barbiturate-induced sleep and delaying the onset of chemically induced convulsions, consistent with the traditional sedative and anticonvulsant use of Hu Po.
Abietic acid
Diterpene resin acidConcentration: Major resin-acid fraction
A principal resin acid of the fossilised pine resin matrix. Abietic acid and related diterpene acids show anti-inflammatory activity and contribute to the resinous body of amber used traditionally for reducing swelling and promoting tissue regeneration when applied topically.
Succinoabietic / succinosilvic / succinoresinol acids
Amber-specific resin acids and alcoholsConcentration: Variable minor fraction
Fossilisation-derived acids and resin alcohols (including succinoabietinolic and succoxyabietic acids and succinoresinol) that form the polymerised amber skeleton. They are largely responsible for amber's insolubility, which is why Hu Po is administered as a fine powder rather than decocted.

Aromatic volatile components contributing to amber's odour on heating. Borneol is a recognised aromatic orifice-opening agent in TCM and may support the spirit-calming and channel-opening actions attributed to Hu Po.

The cross-linked diterpenoid polymer forming the physical mass of amber. Pharmacologically inert as a polymer but the mineral-like heaviness underlies the TCM concept of a 'heavy, settling' substance that anchors the spirit and settles fright.
⚠ Drug Interactions
CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, barbiturates, sedative-hypnotics, alcohol)
Succinic acid, a marker constituent, has demonstrated CNS-inhibitory effects in animals (reduced locomotion, prolonged barbiturate sleep). Concurrent use with sedative drugs could theoretically produce additive central depression, although human data are lacking.
Clinical note: Monitor for excess drowsiness if combined with sedatives; no confirmed clinical interaction reported.

Preparation Methods
Fine powder taken directly (never decocted)
Parts: fossilised resin (amber)
Amber is insoluble and heat-sensitive, so it is not boiled. Grind to a very fine powder and take 1.5-3 g directly, swallowed with warm water or with the strained decoction of other herbs, or incorporate into pills and powders. Used to calm the spirit for insomnia, palpitations, anxiety and childhood fright/convulsions.
Powder in pill or bolus formulas
Parts: fossilised resin (amber)
Combined into classical pill formulas (e.g. with cinnabar-type spirit-settling agents historically, or with modern non-toxic substitutes) for chronic insomnia and epilepsy, and with blood-invigorating or stranguria-relieving herbs for painful/bloody urinary dribbling.
Topical powder

The fine powder is applied externally to slow-healing sores and swellings to reduce swelling and promote tissue regeneration.
Clinical Studies
Succinum extracts inhibit microglial-derived neuroinflammation and depressive-like behaviors
Pinus spp. succinum extract dose-dependently attenuated lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide and TNF-alpha release and microglial phenotypic transformation in BV2 cells, and intragastric administration improved sickness, anxiety and depressive-like behaviours in chronically stressed mice, supporting the spirit-calming use of Hu Po.
Chinese Medicine, Succinum, Ameliorates Cognitive Impairment of Carotid Artery Ligation Rats and Inhibits Apoptosis of HT22 Hippocampal Cells via Regulation of the GSK3beta/beta-Catenin Pathway
Succinum ameliorated learning and memory impairment in bilateral carotid-artery-ligated rats and reduced apoptosis of HT22 hippocampal neurons, with effects mediated through the GSK3beta/beta-catenin signalling pathway, providing mechanistic support for cognitive and neuroprotective applications.
