Description

Nei Bu Dang Gui Jian Zhong Tang (Internally Tonifying Tangkuei Decoction to Construct the Middle), from Important Formulas Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces for any Emergency (7th century).

Associated formula of Xiao Jian Zhong Tang.

Actions: Warms the middle burner; Tonifies deficiency; Relaxes hypertonicity; Stops pain

Indications: Postpartum emaciation and weakness with persistent tight abdominal pain, shortness of breath, reduced appetite, dry lips and mouth, wan complexion, and reduced breast milk.

Usage: Focuses the main formula on nourishing blood for postpartum use.

Modifications:

  • To enhance the Spleen's production of blood: add Astragali Radix (huang qi)
  • Severe blood loss or incessant postpartum bleeding: add 18g Rehmanniae Radix preparata (shu di huang) and 6g Asini Corii Colla (e jiao)

Preparation

Decoction; in severe deficiency dissolve 18g Maltosum (yi tang) in the strained decoction.
