Location

On the cubital crease, in the depression on the radial side of the tendon of biceps brachii.

How to locate: Flex the elbow slightly; the biceps tendon stands out at the centre of the crease. The point is in the hollow immediately to its thumb side.

Regional anatomy: The radial nerve lies laterally and the brachial artery medially to the biceps tendon.

Needling

Depth: 0.5–1.0 cun

Angle: Perpendicular; may also be pricked to bleed

Bleeding technique: Pricking to bleed is a classical method here for acute sore throat, high fever and summer-heat with sudden vomiting and diarrhoea.

Functions

Clears heat from the Lung and descends rebellious qi
Regulates the water passages
Relaxes the sinews and activates the channel
Drains damp-heat and resolves phlegm

Indications

Clinical Notes

The Water point on a Metal channel, and so the sedation point — the primary distal choice for draining excess heat from the Lung. Its reputation for acute vomiting with diarrhoea is a distinct, non-respiratory use worth remembering.

Combinations Using This Point

Low back pain on the Bladder channel treated from the Lung channel of the opposite forearm, with the patient moving the back during retention.

Knee pain treated at the elbow of the opposite arm, on the channel that corresponds to the aspect of the knee involved.
