Middle; images the upper cervical spine
-
Uppermost; images the occiput and shoulder
Treatment Principle
Treat the cervical spine through the Achilles tendon, which images it, leaving the neck free to move.
Indications
Method
Needle through the Achilles tendon, perpendicular, 0.5 to 1.0 cun. Two of the three is usually enough. Have the patient rotate and flex the neck through the restricted range while the needles are retained.
⚠ Cautions
Needling through the tendon is uncomfortable — warn the patient. Avoid in Achilles tendinopathy, in patients on fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and where there is any history of tendon rupture. Neck pain with radiating arm symptoms or neurological signs needs assessment first.
About
The correspondence Tung used here — the Achilles tendon standing for the cervical spine — is one of the system's more striking, and one of the more reliably effective.
Rationale
Both the Achilles tendon and the cervical spine are the narrow, load-bearing junction at the end of their respective structures, and both carry the Bladder channel. Whatever the mechanism, the practical consequence is consistent: strong stimulation at the tendon with active neck movement restores rotation quickly in acute torticollis.
Clinical Notes
Measure rotation against a fixed landmark before and after. Dr. Tan's Small Intestine balance for the neck addresses the same problem from a different direction, and the two are not incompatible.
