Treatment Principle

Regulate qi in the lower abdomen and the genito-urinary region from the index finger.

Indications

Prostatitis and benign prostatic enlargementhernia and testicular painlower abdominal distensiondifficulty or hesitancy in urinationpalpitations and chest tightness

Method

Needle Da Jian, Zhong Jian and Xiao Jian as a three-needle Dao Ma, shallow perpendicular, 2 to 3 fen. Tung's convention is the left hand in men and the right in women. Retain 30 minutes.

Needle order: Da Jian, Zhong Jian, Xiao Jian.

⚠ Cautions

Urinary retention is an emergency. Prostate symptoms of new onset, or with blood in the urine, need medical assessment before being treated.

About

The Five Jian — Da, Xiao, Fu, Wai and Zhong — run along the radial aspect of the index finger. Three of the five make up the standard needling set; Fu Jian and Wai Jian are used as a separate pair for hernia.

Rationale

The index finger images the lower abdomen in Tung's mapping. The Heart and Lung indications that accompany the urogenital ones reflect the finger's other correspondences rather than a second mechanism.

Clinical Notes

Shallow needling — these are finger points, and depth adds nothing. The single-side convention is characteristic of the Tung system and is followed by most lineages.
