Xiaochangshu and Baihuanshu
Star小腸俞、白環俞 (Xiǎochángshū, Báihuánshū)
Modern Chinese point-pair (对穴) teaching, as compiled by Guo Changqing and colleagues at the School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Points
-
Back-Shu point of the Small Intestine; separates clear from turbid and clears damp-heat from the lower burner.
Prone. On the sacrum, level with the first posterior sacral foramen, 1.5 cun lateral to the midline (the source describes the level as the lower border of the S1 spinous process). Needle straight in to 0.8–1.0 cun, through the subcutaneous tissue and the thoracolumbar aponeurosis (the source names latissimus dorsi) into the erector spinae (sacrospinalis). An aching numbness should be felt locally.
- Pregnancy: contraindicated
-
White Ring Shu; regulates the lower burner, benefits the genitals and strengthens the lumbosacral region.
Prone. On the sacrum, level with the fourth posterior sacral foramen, 1.5 cun lateral to the median sacral crest. Needle straight in to 1.0–1.5 cun, through the subcutaneous tissue into gluteus maximus. An aching numbness should spread up towards the waist.
- Pregnancy: contraindicated
Needling Safety
Cited hazards for these points. Tick what applies to the patient to see the cautions that follow from it.
Treatment Principle
Regulate the lower burner and the functions of the intestines and bladder.
Indications
Method
Patient prone. BL27 is needled perpendicularly 0.8–1.0 cun until a local aching numbness appears; BL30 is needled perpendicularly 1.0–1.5 cun until the sensation spreads to the waist.
About
Two sacral Bladder-channel points that regulate the lower burner, the intestines and the bladder. Beyond urinary and bowel complaints, they treat irregular periods, hernia and spermatorrhoea, and a weak, aching lower back and knees.
Rationale
BL27, the Back-Shu point of the Small Intestine at the first sacral foramen, separates the clear from the turbid and clears damp-heat from the lower burner; BL30, at the fourth foramen, regulates the lower burner and benefits the genitals and lumbosacral region. Spanning the sacrum from top to bottom, they cover the pelvic organs from behind.
