Traditional Chinese Uses
Nuo Mi (glutinous rice, sticky rice) is a warm, sweet food-herb that tonifies the middle burner and stops abnormal sweating. It warms and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach to address chronic diarrhea, poor appetite, and digestive weakness from cold deficiency. Its mild astringent quality consolidates Protective Qi to reduce spontaneous and night sweats. As a staple food with medicinal properties, it is commonly incorporated into healing congees and formulas for digestive weakness.

Botanical Description
Oryza sativa var. glutinosa is the glutinous or “sticky” rice cultivar group of the cultivated rice species in the grass family Poaceae. It is an erect annual grass 0.6–1.5 m tall with hollow, jointed culms, linear leaves, and a terminal panicle of spikelets each bearing a single floret. The polished caryopsis (grain) is short and opaque-white due to a starch composition rich in amylopectin and very low in amylose, which makes the cooked rice sticky and cohesive. Grown throughout warm Asia in flooded paddies, it has been cultivated for millennia. In Chinese medicine the unpolished or polished grain (Nuo Mi) is sweet and slightly warm, tonifying middle-jiao Qi, harmonizing the stomach, generating fluids, and astringing sweat and urine; it is used for spontaneous sweating, diarrhea, and Qi deficiency.

⚠ Drug Interactions
Antidiabetic drugs (insulin, sulfonylureas, other glucose-lowering agents)
Glutinous rice starch is almost entirely rapidly digested amylopectin and can produce a marked postprandial glucose rise, which may partly oppose glycemic control in patients on antidiabetic therapy.
Clinical note: Diabetic patients should account for glutinous rice as a high-glycemic carbohydrate; monitor blood glucose and portion size rather than viewing it as a true drug interaction.

Preparation Methods
Cooked grain / congee (zhou)

Cooked as steamed rice or simmered into a soft congee, often with tonifying herbs such as jujube (Da Zao) or ginseng, to strengthen the Spleen-Stomach and augment qi.
Dry-fried (chao) grain

Dry-frying until fragrant enhances the warming, astringent quality used to help stop chronic diarrhea and spontaneous sweating.
Added to decoctions / medicinal foods

Used within classical formulas and medicinal-diet recipes to protect the Stomach and secure essence; typical food-medicine amounts of 30 g or more.
Clinical Studies
Eating glutinous brown rice twice a day for 8 weeks improves glycemic control in Japanese patients with diabetes mellitus
In 16 patients with type 2 diabetes, substituting glutinous brown rice twice daily for 8 weeks significantly reduced HbA1c (7.5% to 7.2%, P=0.014) and postprandial glucose and was well tolerated, indicating glutinous (brown) rice can be incorporated into diabetic diets when whole-grain.
