Traditional Chinese Uses
Lu Rong (velvet deer antler, fresh antler velvet) is a warm, sweet substance used as one of the most powerful Kidney Yang tonics in Chinese medicine, supplementing both Yang and Essence (Jing). It is used for Kidney Yang and Essence deficiency with impotence, infertility, cold lower back and knees, fatigue, and developmental delay in children. As a tonifying substance that strengthens sinew, bone, and the thoroughfare vessel, it is revered as a supreme restorative for debilitating deficiency conditions and delayed development.
Botanical Description
Lu Rong is the young, soft, still-growing antler of male sika deer (Cervus nippon) or red deer (Cervus elaphus), harvested before the cartilage ossifies into bone. Velvet antler is one of the fastest-growing mammalian tissues, elongating several centimetres per day during spring and early summer under the influence of testosterone and IGF-1. The fresh antler is covered with a fine fuzzy skin (the velvet) that is densely vascularised and richly innervated, supplying the inner zone of pre-osseous cartilage with blood. After harvest the antlers are blanched, dried, and sliced transversely into thin discs displaying concentric tissue zones. This is an animal product, not a plant, and is included in the Chinese materia medica.

⚠ Drug Interactions
Hormone-sensitive conditions / hormonal therapy
Velvet antler contains trace sex steroids and IGF-1-type growth factors; theoretical concern exists for hormone-sensitive tumors (breast, uterine, prostate) or interference with hormonal/anti-hormonal therapy.
Clinical note: Avoid or use only under supervision in patients with hormone-sensitive cancers, pregnancy, or on hormonal therapy.
Immunosuppressant drugs
Deer velvet has immunostimulant activity in animal models, which could theoretically oppose the intended effect of immunosuppressive medication.

Preparation Methods
Powder (taken directly)
Parts: Young pilose (velvet) antler
The antler is thinly sliced and ground to a fine powder; typically 1-2 g/day is taken in divided doses stirred into warm water, wine, or swallowed in capsules. It is generally NOT decocted, because prolonged boiling is thought to destroy the heat-sensitive peptide/growth-factor constituents. Started at low dose and increased gradually to avoid over-stimulation (dizziness, dry mouth, rising yang).
Medicinal wine / tincture

Sliced antler is steeped in grain alcohol for weeks to make a tonic wine used for kidney-yang deficiency, cold, and fatigue. Contraindicated in yin deficiency with heat signs, hypertension, fevers, and pregnancy.
Conservation and regulatory note

Legitimate commercial Lu Rong is harvested from FARMED deer (chiefly Cervus elaphus/red deer and farmed Cervus nippon/sika) as a renewable, regrown tissue, and such farmed product is legal to trade. However, several WILD sika-deer (Cervus nippon) subspecies are nationally protected in China and certain red-deer subspecies (e.g. Cervus elaphus bactrianus/hanglu) are CITES-listed; wild-sourced antler may be restricted or prohibited. Buyers should verify farmed, documented sourcing and comply with CITES/national wildlife law. Plant-based yang tonics (e.g. Yin Yang Huo/Epimedium, Ba Ji Tian, Rou Cong Rong) or antler glue/'shuang' by-products may serve as substitutes where animal sourcing is a concern.

A randomized clinical trial of elk velvet antler in rheumatoid arthritis
A six-month RCT of elk velvet antler in rheumatoid arthritis found no statistically significant benefit over placebo on disease activity or symptom measures, illustrating the limited human evidence for the traditional tonic claims.
Health benefits of deer and elk velvet antler supplements: a systematic review of randomised controlled studies
Review of seven RCTs (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, sexual function, athletic performance) concluded that current human trials do not provide convincing support for velvet-antler health claims, with only weak positive signals in osteoarthritis.
Cornu cervi pantotrichum supplementation improves physiological adaptions during intensive endurance training
In endurance-trained mice, deer antler extract (approx. equivalent to 20 g/day for a 60-kg adult) lowered exercise-induced serum ammonia and creatine kinase and helped maintain body composition, supporting an anti-fatigue/adaptogenic action, though this is a preclinical model.
