Energetics dose-weighted

The formula's overall nature, taste balance and channel reach, weighted by each herb's dose. Classical formulas often pair warm and cool herbs on purpose, so a net figure summarises the mix — it doesn't describe every herb in it.

Nature

Cold Cool Neutral Warm Hot

Net slightly cool (-0.63)

From 100% of the weighed grams.

cold cool warm hot

Grams by band: cold 26%, cool 44%, warm 26%, hot 4%.

Pairs warm and cool. 30% of the weighed grams are warm or hot and 70% cool or cold — the net is their average, not the whole story.

Small but decisive: Huang Lian 3g (cold, 4% of the grams), Wu Zhu Yu 3g (hot, 4% of the grams). Dose weighting nearly cancels a herb this small, but it may be what the formula is for.

Taste

pungent sweet sour bitter
  • pungent 20%
  • sweet 30%
  • sour 7%
  • bitter 43%

From 100% of the weighed grams.

Channels reached

  • Lung 63%
  • Stomach 59%
  • Spleen 59%
  • Heart 41%
  • Gallbladder 30%
  • Liver 22%

Share of the grams entering each channel, from 100% of the weighed grams.

Dose-weighted from each herb's recorded nature, taste and channels (missing values are left out, never counted as neutral). It describes the composition — it is not a recommendation.

Full equations
  • This formula = Wu Ji Wan + Ban Xia, Chen Pi, Huang Qin, Shi Hu, Zhi Zi and Zhu Ru. Bai Shao at about 4× the dose relative to the other herbs, against the catalogue's Wu Ji Wan.
  • This formula = Zuo Jin Wan + Wu Ji Wan + Ban Xia, Chen Pi, Huang Qin, Shi Hu, Zhi Zi and Zhu Ru. Relative doses differ by up to about 6× from the catalogue's Zuo Jin Wan.

Each entry reads as the larger formula written out: “+” adds its other catalogue cores, then the herbs none of them hold. A catalogue formula counts as a core only when at least 80% of its herbs are present, no more than 1 is absent, and the absent herb is not its chief.
