Dui Yao — Core Herb Pairs

The classical two-herb combinations at the heart of this formula, as recorded on the herbs' own pages — each pair has an action neither herb has alone.

Ai Ye艾叶 + E Jiao阿胶

The combination warms the channels and nourishes blood while stopping bleeding, securing the Chong and Ren vessels.

Uterine bleeding, prolonged spotting and threatened miscarriage with bleeding from deficiency cold of the Chong and Ren.

Energetics dose-weighted

The formula's overall nature, taste balance and channel reach, weighted by each herb's dose. Classical formulas often pair warm and cool herbs on purpose, so a net figure summarises the mix — it doesn't describe every herb in it.

Nature

Preparation

Source text: cook all but E Jiao in 5 cups [1,000 mL] water plus 3 cups [600 mL] grain-based liquor down to 3 cups [600 mL]; strain, melt E Jiao in it; take 1 cup [200 mL] warm three times daily until symptoms resolve. Today decoct bracketed doses in water with or without liquor, dissolving E Jiao just before serving. Liquor strengthens the herbs and prevents stasis.

Each entry reads as the larger formula written out: “+” adds its other catalogue cores, then the herbs none of them hold. A catalogue formula counts as a core only when at least 80% of its herbs are present, no more than 1 is absent, and the absent herb is not its chief.
