Overview

For a lay person:

Osteoporosis is thinning of the bones that makes them fragile and likely to break, often from a minor fall. It usually causes no symptoms until a fracture happens.

For a trained medical person:

Low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration diagnosed by DXA or fragility fracture. Treatment: calcium and vitamin D, exercise, falls prevention, bisphosphonates, denosumab or anabolic agents.

In Chinese medicine:

Flaws and Sionneau's textbook differentiates this condition into these patterns: Spleen and Kidney Yang Deficiency; Liver blood-kidney yin deficiency; Spleen qi and kidney yin and yang deficiency; Qi and Blood Stagnation. Treatment follows the pattern a patient presents with, not the Western diagnosis alone.
