Extra point · Extra (Back) · point EX-B2
Also known as Huatuo Jiaji, Hua Tuo's Paravertebral Points
Location
A set of 34 paired points on the back, 0.5 cun lateral to the lower border of each spinous process from T1 to L5.
Needling
Depth:
0.5–1.0 cun
Angle:
Perpendicular, or angled slightly toward the spine
⚠ Cautions: In the thoracic region, angle toward the spine and observe the depth limit — deep lateral needling risks pneumothorax.
Functions
- Regulates the qi of the corresponding spinal segment and its organ
- Relieves pain and stiffness of the spine
- Treats the internal organs segmentally
Indications
Spinal pain and stiffness at any levelsegmental treatment of internal organ disease — the thoracic points for chest and upper abdomen, the lumbar for lower abdomen and legsintercostal neuralgia and shinglesnumbness and weakness of the limbsparalysis after spinal injury
Clinical Notes
Not one point but a paired series along the whole spine, attributed to the physician Hua Tuo. Because each pair sits over a segmental nerve root, they give a precise anatomical route to both the spine and the viscera; they are the backbone of orthopaedic and neurological acupuncture.
