  3. T.88.14 Qi Huang bilateral or unilateral

Treatment Principle

Nourish and regulate the Liver, and through the Liver benefit the eyes and the blood.

Indications

Chronic hepatitis and cirrhosisfatty liverjaundiceblurred vision, eye fatigue and chronic eye diseasedizzinessfatigue and low energyirregular menstruationhemiplegia

Method

Needle deeply — 1.5 to 2.5 cun, perpendicular — into the medial thigh. Retain 30 to 45 minutes. Used over an extended course.

Needle order: Ming Huang (the principal point) first, then Tian Huang above and Qi Huang below.

⚠ Cautions

Deep needling of the medial thigh; identify the femoral vessels and stay well clear of the femoral triangle. Use caution in anticoagulated patients.

About

The Upper Three Emperors are the thigh counterpart of the Xia San Huang, and Tung's principal Liver group.

Rationale

The medial thigh is Liver channel territory. Needling three points along it as a Dao Ma treats the channel as a whole; the eye indications follow the classical Liver–eye relationship rather than any local anatomy.

Clinical Notes

Used together with the Xia San Huang in chronic liver disease, and with the Si Ma group where liver and skin complaints coexist. As with all the Emperor groups, this is a course rather than a single treatment.
