Western Herbalism Properties
Traditional Uses
In Chinese folk medicine Zanthoxylum simulans (a regional 'hua jiao' / Sichuan-pepper relative, distinct from the official Pharmacopoeia species Z. bungeanum and Z. schinifolium) is used medicinally as well as for spice. The dried aromatic pericarp warms the stomach and is taken as a carminative for indigestion, bloating, cold abdominal pain, colic, nausea and diarrhoea, while the root is used in decoction or maceration against snakebite and gastrointestinal disorders and as an analgesic, including as an adjuvant in surgical anaesthesia, an action attributed to the alkaloids edulinine and skimmianine and to the pungent sanshool alkylamides (Zanthoxylum genus review, Zhang et al.; ScienceDirect Zanthoxylum overview).
Botanical Description
Zanthoxylum simulans is a deciduous, spiny shrub or small tree of the citrus family, growing to about 2–7 m, native to central and eastern China and Taiwan. The stems and branches bear stout, broad-based prickles, and the trunk is often studded with corky thorns. Leaves are pinnately compound with 5–11 ovate to elliptic leaflets that are aromatic when crushed, glossy above and dotted with translucent oil glands; the rachis is often narrowly winged and prickly. Small greenish-yellow flowers are borne in terminal clusters in spring. The fruit is a reddish, warty follicle that splits to release shiny black seeds; the dried pericarp ('Sichuan pepper') is intensely aromatic and produces a tingling, numbing sensation due to sanshool alkylamides. It occurs on hillsides, in thickets and at forest margins. The species is one of several Asian peppers harvested for culinary spice and local medicinal use.
