Western Herbalism Properties
Traditional Uses
In Brazilian folk medicine, assa-peixe leaves and roots are widely used as a decoction or syrup for coughs, bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory complaints, traditionally functioning as an expectorant and anti-inflammatory; flower infusions are taken for colds and fevers (Mors, Rizzini & Pereira, 2000). The species is also the source of a prized monofloral honey marketed for the same indications.
Botanical Description
Vernonanthura polyanthes (syn. Vernonia polyanthes), known in Brazil as assa-peixe, is a tall perennial shrub of the Asteraceae reaching 2–4 m with erect, branched, somewhat woody stems. The alternate, lanceolate leaves are pubescent beneath and serrate at the margins. Numerous small whitish to pale lilac florets are crowded into corymbose panicles produced in the dry season, attracting bees in great numbers — the species is one of the most important honey plants of the Brazilian Cerrado and Atlantic Forest borders. It occurs across much of central and southeastern Brazil and adjacent Paraguay and Bolivia in disturbed pastures, roadsides and forest edges.
