Botanical Description

Vachellia macracantha (formerly Acacia macracantha), known as porknut, huizache or espino, is a thorny, deciduous tree or large shrub of the legume family native to the Americas, ranging from Mexico and the Antilles south through Central America to northwestern Argentina. It typically grows to a small to medium-sized tree, its branches armed with stout, paired, conspicuously long white spines. The foliage is bipinnately compound with numerous small leaflets, giving a feathery appearance, and the plant bears rounded, fluffy heads of small, fragrant golden-yellow flowers followed by elongate, somewhat curved or twisted seed pods. Drought-tolerant and characteristic of dry tropical forest, thorn scrub and disturbed open ground, it is a common component of seasonally dry neotropical landscapes.
