Botanical Description
Cucumis melo L. (muskmelon) is an annual trailing or climbing vine in the Cucurbitaceae, native to Africa and southwestern Asia and widely cultivated across temperate and subtropical regions for its edible fruit. The stems are angular, soft-hairy, 1-3 m long, climbing by simple unbranched tendrils. Leaves are alternate, simple, palmately 5-lobed or angled, 8-15 cm wide, with cordate bases and rough hairy surfaces. Flowers are yellow, solitary, with five fused petals; staminate and pistillate flowers are borne separately on the same plant. The fruit is a large fleshy pepo, variable in shape, size, and surface (smooth, netted, or ribbed), enclosing a central cavity filled with numerous flattened, ovate to elliptic, ivory-white to pale yellow seeds 8-12 mm long, which constitute the medicinal Tian Gua Zi.
