Traditional Uses

In Caribbean and Central American folk and Garifuna medicine, decoctions of Syzygium jambos leaves and bark are used for fevers, diarrhoea, and to lower blood sugar in diabetes, and the seeds are taken in powdered form for chronic diarrhoea (Coe and Anderson, 1996; Morton, 1981).

Botanical Description

Syzygium jambos, commonly known as rose apple, malabar plum or jambu, is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree in the family Myrtaceae native to Southeast Asia (probably Malesia and the Indo-Burma region) and now widely cultivated and naturalised throughout the tropics, including much of the Caribbean, tropical America, Africa and the Pacific islands. Mature trees reach 7 to 12 metres in height, occasionally to 18 metres, with a dense, low-branching, spreading crown and brown, finely flaking bark. The opposite leaves are simple, narrowly lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, 10 to 22 centimetres long and 2.5 to 5 centimetres wide, glossy dark green above and paler beneath, with an entire, slightly wavy margin and a long-tapering acuminate tip; young foliage flushes a striking pinkish-red. Showy flowers are borne in terminal corymbose cymes of four to five blossoms, each 5 to 10 centimetres across and dominated by a hemispherical brush of 200 to 400 long greenish-white to creamy-yellow stamens. The fruit is a roughly globose to ovoid yellowish-white or pale rose-tinted berry 3 to 5 centimetres long with crisp, rose-scented, somewhat hollow flesh enclosing one to two large brown seeds.

Concentration: Major polyphenols of leaf and bark

High-molecular-weight tannins with strong antioxidant, astringent and antimicrobial activity; underlie the traditional use of the astringent leaf and bark decoctions.

Ellagic acid and gallic acid

Concentration: Common phenolic-acid constituents

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phenolic acids that also contribute reported anticancer and hepatoprotective effects in experimental models.

Betulinic acid, friedelin, oleanolic and ursolic acids

Triterpenoids with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities documented in vitro.

Jambones (phloroglucinol derivatives)

Novel phloroglucinol derivatives reported to show cytotoxic and antioxidant activity in isolation studies of the species.

Volatile mono- and sesquiterpenes contributing the fragrant, rose-like aroma and some of the antimicrobial activity of the leaf oil.

⚠ Drug Interactions

Antidiabetic agents (insulin, sulfonylureas, metformin)

Minor Evidence: Theoretical

Leaf extracts have shown blood-glucose-lowering and alpha-glucosidase-inhibitory activity in animal and in vitro models; concurrent use with hypoglycaemic drugs could in theory add to their effect.

Clinical note: No human interaction reports exist; monitor blood glucose if a diabetic patient consumes concentrated leaf preparations alongside glucose-lowering medication.

Preparation Methods

Leaf/bark decoction (astringent)

Parts: Leaf, Bark

Dried leaves or bark are simmered in water to make an astringent decoction used traditionally as a gargle for sore throat, a wash, and internally in small amounts for diarrhoea. The high tannin content makes strong or prolonged internal use inadvisable.

Fruit (fresh, edible)

The crisp, fragrant rose apple is eaten fresh or made into preserves and drinks; it is a mild, edible food use with no special preparation required.

Leaf infusion / poultice

An infusion of the leaves is used in folk practice as a tonic and, applied topically as a poultice or wash, for skin complaints. Preparations are not standardised and should be regarded as traditional rather than clinically validated.

Traditional (pre-modern to present)
In its native range across India and Southeast Asia the rose apple (jambu) has long been used in folk practice: the astringent bark and leaves for diarrhoea and sore throat, the seeds in some traditions for diabetes, and the fruit as a cooling food.

Caribbean and Latin American ethnobotany

Colonial to modern era
Following its pan-tropical introduction, S. jambos entered Caribbean and South American folk medicine, where leaf and bark decoctions are used as astringents, tonics and febrifuges.
