Traditional Chinese Uses

Suan Jiao (Sichuan pepper husk, zanthoxylum) is a warm, strongly pungent herb used in Chinese medicine to warm the Spleen and Stomach, dispel cold and dampness, and kill intestinal parasites. It addresses cold abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea from Spleen-Stomach cold, as well as intestinal parasitic infections. Its characteristic numbing-pungent quality makes it the defining flavoring of Sichuan cuisine and classical formulas for cold-type digestive disorders simultaneously.

Botanical Description

Tamarindus indica is a long-lived, slow-growing evergreen tree in the Fabaceae family reaching 20-30 m tall, with a dense rounded crown and a short, often gnarled trunk up to 1 m in diameter. The bark is rough, grey-brown and fissured. Leaves are pinnately compound, 7-15 cm long, with 10-18 pairs of small oblong leaflets that fold up at night. Pale yellow flowers streaked with red appear in lax racemes and give rise to the characteristic indehiscent pods, 5-15 cm long, brown and brittle-shelled, containing a sticky brown-red sour-sweet pulp surrounding 3-12 hard glossy seeds. Native to tropical Africa, tamarind is now cultivated throughout the tropics for its edible and medicinal pulp.

⚠ Drug Interactions

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)

Moderate Evidence: Established

In healthy volunteers, tamarind fruit extract significantly increased the bioavailability of aspirin and its metabolite, raising plasma salicylate concentrations.

Clinical note: Concurrent intake of large amounts of tamarind may raise salicylate exposure and adverse-effect risk; separate ingestion or use caution.

Ibuprofen

Moderate Evidence: Established

A human volunteer study showed a tamarind-containing meal significantly increased the plasma levels of ibuprofen and its metabolites compared with fasting or a tamarind-free meal.

Clinical note: Tamarind may enhance ibuprofen exposure; caution with concurrent high-dose NSAID use, particularly regarding GI irritation.

Chloroquine

Moderate Evidence: Probable

Tamarind has been reported to decrease the bioavailability of chloroquine, potentially reducing antimalarial efficacy.

Clinical note: Avoid taking tamarind close to chloroquine dosing where the antimalarial effect is critical.

Preparation Methods

Decoction / acidic infusion

Parts: Ripe fruit pulp

Simmer or soak the ripe pulp in water and strain to make a sour, cooling drink that clears Heat, resolves Summer-Heat, generates fluids and relieves thirst; sweeten if desired.

Fresh pulp / paste

Parts: Ripe fruit pulp

Take the softened pulp directly or as a paste to harmonise the Stomach, disperse food stagnation and gently moisten the Intestines to relieve constipation.

Diluted juice / rehydration drink

Parts: Fruit pulp

Dilute the strained pulp with water and a little salt/sugar as a refreshing electrolyte drink for Summer-Heat and thirst. Because tamarind increases the bioavailability of aspirin and ibuprofen and may lower chloroquine levels, avoid large quantities alongside these medicines.
