☯ TCM Properties
Expels Wind, promotes the movement of Qi and dries Dampness; Controls bleeding and promotes tissue regeneration
Traditional Chinese Uses
Song Hua Fen is the dried spring pollen of pines such as Pinus massoniana and P. tabuliformis (Pollen Pini). Sweet and warm, entering the Liver and Spleen channels, it expels Wind, moves Qi and dries Dampness, and it astringes to stop bleeding and promotes the regeneration of tissue. It is used most for external and topical complaints: weeping eczema, impetigo, oozing skin erosions and diaper rash, and traumatic bleeding, where the powder is dusted directly on the affected area.
Taken internally in small amounts (roughly 3-6 g, wrapped when decocted, or as powder/wine) it addresses Wind-Damp discomfort and supports the Center. Being a fine pollen, it is administered as a powder or sprinkled topically rather than relied on as a strong decocted agent. Those with pollen sensitivity should use caution.
Western Herbalism Properties
Botanical Description
Song Hua Fen is the dried pollen of Pinus massoniana, P. tabuliformis, and other Chinese pines (Pinaceae) collected from the staminate cones in spring. The source trees are evergreen monoecious conifers 15–30 m tall with reddish-brown, fissured plate-bark and paired needles 10–25 cm long. Male cones are small, ovoid-cylindric, 1–1.5 cm long, clustered at the base of new shoots in dense yellow racemose groups; they shed copious bright yellow, finely powdery pollen comprising bisaccate (two-winged) grains 40–60 micrometres across, characteristic under microscopy. The collected pollen is sieved free of debris and dried; it is bright sulphur-yellow, with a faintly resinous odour and an almost insipid taste.
