Botanical Description
Solanum violaceum (syn. S. indicum auct.), known in Sanskrit as Brihati, is a prickly perennial undershrub of the Solanaceae widespread across India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia and southern China, growing in open scrub, forest margins, fallow fields and roadsides. It typically reaches 0.5–1.5 m, with stems, petioles and leaf veins armed with straight or slightly recurved yellowish prickles and clothed in a stellate-tomentose indumentum. The alternate leaves are ovate, sinuate-lobed and softly hairy. Cymose clusters of violet to pale purple, five-lobed star-shaped flowers with prominent yellow anther cones are followed by globose berries that ripen from green through yellow to red, about 1 cm in diameter, persisting on the plant. The species is a recognised classical Ayurvedic drug and one of the constituents of the lesser Dashamoola (ten-root) formulation.
