Botanical Description
Solanum nigrescens is an annual to short-lived perennial herb in the Solanaceae family, native to the Americas and closely allied to the cosmopolitan Solanum nigrum complex. Plants are erect to spreading, much-branched, and grow 30 to 100 centimetres tall, with slightly angular green stems that are sparsely covered with simple appressed hairs. Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to broadly lanceolate, 4 to 10 centimetres long, with entire to shallowly sinuate-dentate margins, glabrous to sparsely pubescent on both surfaces. Small white flowers occur in extra-axillary umbel-like cymes of 3 to 10; each flower is 6 to 10 millimetres across, with five reflexed lobes, a yellow central cone of anthers, and a star-shaped corolla. Berries are small spherical drupes, 6 to 9 millimetres in diameter, ripening from green to glossy purplish-black, borne on slender pedicels. It is widespread in Latin America, where it occurs on disturbed ground, field edges, and clearings.
