Botanical Description
Scutellaria minor, the lesser skullcap, is a small slender perennial herb in the family Lamiaceae native to western and central Europe, including Britain, Ireland, France, Iberia, the Low Countries, and the western Mediterranean, growing in wet acid heathy ground, damp grassland, bog margins, and the edges of woodland flushes. The plant forms creeping rhizomes from which arise erect or weakly ascending square stems 5-25 cm tall, sparsely branched and very slightly pubescent. Leaves are opposite, ovate-lanceolate to triangular-cordate, 1-3 cm long, with rounded basal lobes, mostly entire margins (or with one or two shallow teeth near the base), short petioles, and a slightly downy surface. The flowers are borne singly in the upper leaf axils, paired on opposite sides of the stem and all directed to one side (secund). Each corolla is small, 6-10 mm long, two-lipped, pale pink to pinkish-purple with darker spotting on the lower lip, and rises from a short tubular calyx with a characteristic dorsal scale or "skullcap" appendage that enlarges and closes over the developing nutlets in fruit. Flowering occurs from July to October.

Scutellarein and its glucuronide scutellarin are the hallmark 4'-hydroxyflavones that accumulate in the aerial parts (leaves and stems) of Scutellaria species. They are reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasoprotective activity in genus-level studies, but species-specific data for S. minor are essentially absent.
Baicalein / baicalin
4'-deoxyflavone (aglycone and 7-O-glucuronide)Concentration: Genus-characteristic; not quantified for S. minor
Baicalein and the glycoside baicalin are the dominant 4'-deoxyflavones of the genus, concentrated mainly in roots. They are the best-studied Scutellaria flavones (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, GABAergic), though their presence and levels in S. minor have not been directly measured.
Apigenin
FlavoneConcentration: Trace/minor, genus-typical aerial-part flavone
Apigenin is a widely distributed dietary flavone reported among the aerial-part flavones of Scutellaria. It has anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory activity in general pharmacological literature.
Chrysin
4'-deoxyflavoneConcentration: Reported in the leaves of all surveyed Scutellaria species; not quantified for S. minor
Chrysin was found to accumulate in the leaves of every Scutellaria species examined in genus metabolite surveys, suggesting it is a probable component of S. minor foliage as well. It shows antioxidant and anxiolytic activity in the literature.
Preparation Methods
Infusion (herbal tea)
Parts: aerial parts, leaf, flowering tops
In the Western herbal tradition skullcaps are used as gentle nervines. A tea is made by steeping roughly 1–2 g of the dried flowering aerial parts in a cup of freshly boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Note that essentially all traditional and clinical skullcap use rests on Scutellaria lateriflora and S. galericulata; S. minor itself has scant documented medicinal use and no established dosing.
Tincture
Parts: aerial parts
Alcoholic tinctures of the fresh or dried flowering herb are the usual commercial form for skullcap. Because identity confusion within the genus is common, material should be botanically authenticated; adulteration of "skullcap" products with hepatotoxic Teucrium (germander) has historically been a safety concern for the trade.
