Western Herbalism Properties
Traditional Uses
In Turkish (Anatolian) folk medicine, Scorzonera species, including Scorzonera cana, are used for wound healing and pain relief, as well as against complaints such as rheumatism. The wound-healing and anti-inflammatory reputation of S. cana var. jacquiniana has been supported experimentally: aqueous-methanolic extracts of its aerial parts and roots produced significant contraction of experimental wounds and showed clear anti-inflammatory activity in validated in vivo models (Süntar et al., 2012).
Botanical Description
Scorzonera cana is a perennial herb of the daisy family (Asteraceae), in the chicory tribe, native to a broad range from Europe through southwestern Siberia to Iran, including the Balkans, Italy, Anatolia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. It grows from a stout taproot, producing one to several stems 5 to 60 centimetres tall that exude a milky latex when broken. The basal leaves are narrow and pinnately lobed into linear segments, often greyish with a covering of fine hairs (the epithet "cana" meaning hoary or grey). The flower heads are solitary or few, with strap-shaped yellow ray florets typical of the tribe, blooming from May to August. The fruit is an elongated achene 6 to 9 millimetres long topped by a pappus of feathery (plumose) bristles that aids wind dispersal. It is a plant of dry grasslands, steppe and rocky slopes in the temperate zone.
