Traditional Uses

Wedge-leaved savory (Satureja cuneifolia) is a traditional Mediterranean culinary and folk-medicinal herb. In Turkish and Balkan folk practice the aromatic aerial parts are brewed as an herbal tea used as a carminative for digestive complaints, stomach ache and flatulence, and as a soothing remedy for coughs and colds; it is also used as a savory culinary seasoning (Turkish ethnobotanical surveys). Phytochemical and pharmacological studies of the essential oil (rich in thymol and carvacrol) have confirmed notable antimicrobial, antispasmodic and antioxidant activity (Guelluece et al., 2004; Turkish folk-medicine literature).

Botanical Description

Satureja cuneifolia (wedge-leaved savory) is a small, woody-based, aromatic dwarf shrub or subshrub of the mint family, usually 10-40 cm tall, much-branched and forming low cushions. The leaves are opposite, small, narrowly wedge-shaped to oblong (cuneate at the base), 5-15 mm long, thick, entire-margined and dotted with aromatic oil glands, giving off a strong thyme-like savory scent. The small two-lipped flowers are white to pale pink or pale purple, borne in few-flowered whorls in the upper leaf axils. The fruit consists of four tiny nutlets enclosed in the persistent calyx. Native to the Mediterranean region, especially the eastern Mediterranean and Balkans through to Anatolia, it grows on dry rocky slopes, limestone outcrops, garrigue and open scrub.

Native Region: Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Iraq, Italy, Sardegna, Spain, Yugoslavia
