Botanical Description
Rubus rhombifolius is a European bramble belonging to the Rubus fruticosus aggregate, the great complex of apomictic blackberry microspecies. Like its relatives it is a scrambling, more or less arching shrub with biennial, ridged and prickly canes that root at the tips. The leaves are palmately compound, usually with three to five toothed leaflets, the terminal leaflet broadly rhombic to ovate as the epithet suggests, green above and paler and hairy beneath. The five-petalled flowers are white to pale pink, borne in branched clusters, and give way to the familiar aggregate fruit of clustered black drupelets. It grows in hedgerows, woodland margins, scrub, and waste ground across temperate Europe, spreading vigorously by tip-rooting and seed.
