Botanical Description

Rubus leptothyrsos is a bramble of the rose family belonging to the European blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) aggregate, a scrambling, arching shrub with biennial, ridged canes armed with prickles. The leaves are palmately compound, usually with three to five toothed, pointed leaflets that are green above and paler and hairy beneath. White to pale-pink five-petalled flowers are borne in branched clusters. The fruit is an aggregate of small drupelets, green then red, ripening to black and edible. As one of the many apomictic microspecies within the blackberry complex, it is part of the native European bramble flora, growing in hedgerows, woodland margins, scrub and waste ground.
