Botanical Description

Rubus gremlii is a European bramble belonging to the highly diverse Rubus fruticosus aggregate, the complex of blackberry microspecies of the rose family. Like its relatives it is a scrambling, woody shrub with long, arching, prickly stems (canes) that root at their tips, bearing palmately compound leaves of three to five toothed, often whitish-backed leaflets. The five-petalled flowers are white to pale pink, borne in branched clusters, and are followed by the familiar aggregate fruit of small drupelets ripening from green through red to glossy black. It grows in hedgerows, woodland margins, scrub and waste ground in temperate Europe. As one of many segregate microspecies within the blackberry aggregate, it is distinguished by fine technical characters of its stems, leaves and armature.
