Botanical Description

Rubus dollnensis is one of the many apomictic microspecies that make up the European blackberry or bramble complex (Rubus fruticosus aggregate, Rosaceae). Like other members of the aggregate it is a scrambling, arching shrub with biennial, prickle-armed canes that root at the tips. The leaves are palmately compound, usually with three to five toothed leaflets that are green above and paler, often felted, beneath. Five-petalled white to pale-pink flowers are borne in clusters in summer and develop into aggregate fruits of small drupelets that ripen from red to glossy black. As with the aggregate generally, it occurs in hedgerows, woodland margins and scrub across temperate Europe. The microspecies are notoriously difficult to distinguish and are treated collectively for most practical purposes.

Native Region: Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Poland
