Botanical Description
Rotheca serrata (formerly Clerodendrum serratum) is an erect shrub or subshrub growing roughly 1 to 4 metres tall, with bluntly four-angled, slightly woody stems. The leaves are usually arranged in whorls of three or opposite, elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, 10 to 20 cm long, with sharply saw-toothed margins and a short stalk. The showy flowers are borne in large, erect, branched terminal panicles; each bloom is two-lipped and bluish to violet with a long-protruding curved stamen column and a single darker lower petal, giving the inflorescence a striking layered appearance. The fruit is a succulent drupe that turns purplish-black, seated on the persistent calyx. Widely distributed through tropical and subtropical Asia, it occurs across the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, southern China and Southeast Asia, growing in open forest, scrub and grassy hill slopes from the lowlands into the lower mountains.
