Botanical Description
Rosa deseglisei is a wild rose of the family Rosaceae, a microspecies belonging to the dog-rose aggregate (Rosa canina sensu lato). It is a deciduous, arching shrub with long, scrambling green stems armed with stout, hooked (falcate) prickles. The pinnate leaves bear two to three pairs of toothed, elliptic to ovate leaflets plus a terminal one, the teeth and characters of the leaflets and styles distinguishing it within the difficult canina group. In early summer it produces five-petalled flowers ranging from pale to fairly deep pink, with a central boss of yellow stamens. These are followed by smooth, ovoid to ellipsoid red hips (false fruits) that ripen in autumn and persist into winter. It grows in hedgerows, scrub, woodland margins and rough grassland across Europe.
