Traditional Uses

In East Asian folk and traditional Chinese medicine the fruit (hips), known in China as cimeiguo, has been used as a tonic and to treat dyspepsia, gastroenteralgia and menstrual irregularity, being regarded as a remedy that strengthens the spleen, regulates qi and nourishes the blood (Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicines). Botanical Description

Rosa davurica, the Amur or Dahurian rose, is a deciduous shrub in the family Rosaceae native to north-eastern China, Korea, the Russian Far East and Japan, where it grows in thickets, forest margins, riverbanks and grassy slopes. It typically reaches 1 to 1.5 metres in height, with erect, branching stems bearing pairs of stout, flattened, straight or slightly curved prickles below the leaves. The leaves are pinnately compound with usually seven to nine elliptic to oblong leaflets that are toothed, glandular and grey-green beneath. The fragrant flowers are borne singly or in small clusters and are pink to deep rose, around 3 to 4 centimetres across, with five petals and numerous yellow stamens. Flowering occurs in early summer. The fruit is a smooth, globose to ovoid red hip about 1 to 1.5 centimetres in diameter, persisting into winter and rich in vitamin C, tannins and flavonoids. It is hardy and widely distributed across cool-temperate East Asia.
