Botanical Description
Pinellia ternata (ban xia) is a small perennial herb in the Araceae native to China, Japan, and Korea, where it grows in fields, grassy slopes, and disturbed ground. It arises from a globose underground tuber (corm/rhizome) and bears long-petioled leaves that are simple in young plants but become three-parted (ternate) at maturity, with a small bulbil often borne at the junction of leaflets. The inflorescence is a slender green-to-purplish spathe enclosing a spadix with a long whip-like appendage.
