Botanical Description
Papaver rhoeas, the common or corn poppy, is an erect annual herb of the poppy family, 20 to 90 cm tall, with slender, branching, bristly-hairy stems that exude a white latex when broken. The leaves are deeply pinnately divided into toothed, lance-shaped lobes and are also stiffly hairy. The flowers are solitary on long stalks; the buds nod before opening, then the two sepals fall to reveal four large, delicate, crumpled, brilliant scarlet petals, often with a dark blotch at the base. The numerous stamens surround a flat-topped ovary that develops into a smooth, rounded capsule opening by a ring of pores beneath the disc to scatter the tiny seeds. Native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia, the corn poppy is a familiar weed of cornfields, roadsides, and disturbed ground on a range of soils.

Rhoeadine and rhoeagenine
Rhoeadine-type isoquinoline alkaloidsConcentration: Principal alkaloids, characteristic of the species
Rhoeadine-type alkaloids (rhoeadine, isorhoeadine, rhoeagenine), built on a benzazepine system fused with an acetal/hemiacetal moiety, are found essentially only in P. rhoeas and are associated with the plant's mild sedative and calming reputation. Unlike opium poppy, P. rhoeas contains no morphine.
Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (reticuline, armepavine)

Reticuline and armepavine are biosynthetic precursors within the alkaloid pathway and contribute to the overall low-potency alkaloid profile of the aerial parts.
Roemerine and other aporphines

Aporphine alkaloids such as roemerine are present at low levels and add to the plant's traditional mild analgesic/sedative use.
Anthocyanins (mecocyanin / cyanidin glycosides)

The bright red petal pigments (chiefly cyanidin glycosides such as mecocyanin) give antioxidant activity and are the basis of the traditional red-poppy petal syrup used as a colouring and demulcent.

These flavonols provide the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity demonstrated for petal and leaf extracts.
⚠ Drug Interactions
Sedatives / CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, alcohol)
Animal studies show P. rhoeas extract has sedative and analgesic effects; concurrent use with CNS depressants could in theory be additive, although the alkaloid content of P. rhoeas is low.
Clinical note: Use caution when combining traditional poppy-petal preparations with sedatives; no clinical interaction has been documented.
Preparation Methods
Petal syrup / infusion
Parts: petals
Dried red petals are infused (about 1-2 g per cup of hot water, 10 minutes) or made into a syrup traditionally used as a mild sedative and demulcent for irritable coughs and to help sleep. Corn poppy is a low-alkaloid species and is NOT the opium poppy, but preparations should still be used in moderation and avoided in infants and during pregnancy.
Culinary use of seeds
Parts: ripe seeds
The ripe seeds contain negligible alkaloid and are used like other poppy seeds in baking; only the milky latex and green parts carry the mild alkaloids.

Effects of Papaver rhoeas extract on the expression and development of morphine-dependence in mice
Hydroalcoholic P. rhoeas extract reduced the expression and development of morphine dependence in mice, lending experimental support to the traditional use of corn poppy in easing opioid-withdrawal symptoms.
Ethyl acetate fractions of Papaver rhoeas L. and Papaver nudicaule L. exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities
Ethyl acetate fractions significantly reduced LPS-induced nitric oxide production in a dose-dependent manner, inhibited inflammatory signalling and activated antioxidant defence genes, indicating antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential attributed largely to alkaloids.
