Botanical Description

Melaleuca viridiflora, commonly known as broad-leaved paperbark or niaouli, is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) native to northern Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, and adjacent islands. It typically reaches 10 to 20 meters in height, with a crooked or leaning trunk clothed in characteristic thick, soft, papery, layered cream-to-whitish bark that peels in large flexible sheets. The alternate leaves are large for the genus, broadly elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, 7 to 22 centimeters long, leathery, with five to nine longitudinal parallel veins and a strongly aromatic, camphoraceous fragrance when crushed due to high concentrations of volatile oils, particularly 1,8-cineole. Spectacular bottlebrush-like flower spikes, 4 to 14 centimeters long, bear numerous flowers with prominent yellow-green, cream, red, or pink stamens grouped in bundles. Small woody capsular fruits are clustered along the older branches. The species grows in seasonally wet lowlands, swamp margins, and savanna woodlands.

Concentration: Roughly 40-60% in the common 'cineole' chemotype leaf oil

The dominant constituent of the cineole-type niaouli oil. It is expectorant, mucolytic and mildly anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, underpinning the oil's traditional respiratory use; high-cineole oils must be kept away from the face of infants and small children because of laryngospasm risk.

Bicyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon

Concentration: Common secondary constituent (single-digit to ~15%)

Contributes antimicrobial and bronchodilatory/anti-inflammatory activity and the fresh, pine-like top note of the oil.

Viridiflorol

Sesquiterpene alcohol

Concentration: Characteristic constituent; dominant in the 'viridiflorol' chemotype

A signature sesquiterpene alcohol of the species (source of the name viridiflora). It shows antimicrobial and antioxidant activity; the viridiflorol-rich chemotype is marketed for gentler, purported hormone-balancing uses, though clinical evidence is lacking.

Adds antimicrobial and antioxidant activity and a citrus note; a common component of Myrtaceae leaf oils.

alpha-Terpineol

Oxygenated monoterpene alcohol

Concentration: Minor constituent

Contributes antimicrobial and mild soothing activity and is one of the alcohols associated with the lower skin irritancy of niaouli relative to tea-tree oil.

(E)-Nerolidol

Sesquiterpene alcohol

Concentration: Minor constituent in cineole-type oils (dominant in related nerolidol chemotypes)

An antimicrobial and skin-penetration-enhancing sesquiterpene alcohol; abundant in some related Melaleuca (quinquenervia) chemotypes with which niaouli oil is often traded.

Concentration: Minor constituent

A dietary cannabinoid-CB2 agonist sesquiterpene with anti-inflammatory activity found broadly in Melaleuca leaf oils.

⚠ Drug Interactions

CYP3A4 / CYP-metabolised medications (e.g. via 1,8-cineole)

Minor Evidence: Theoretical

1,8-Cineole, the main constituent, is a known inducer of hepatic cytochrome P450 (including CYP3A) enzymes in animal and in vitro studies; heavy or prolonged oral use of cineole-rich oils could theoretically lower plasma levels of co-administered CYP3A substrates.

Clinical note: Clinically relevant interactions are unlikely from normal aromatic/topical use; avoid ingesting large amounts of the neat oil, especially alongside narrow-therapeutic-index medications.

Preparation Methods

Steam-distilled essential oil (niaouli oil)

Parts: leaves, young twigs

The fresh leaves are steam-distilled to yield niaouli essential oil, used diluted (typically 1-3% in a carrier) for chest rubs, inhalations and antiseptic skin applications. Do not take the neat oil internally, keep cineole-rich oils away from the face/nose of infants and young children (risk of bronchospasm/laryngospasm), and patch-test before topical use.

Rectified oil (Gomenol-type)

Historically the distilled oil was rectified and sold as the pharmaceutical product 'Gomenol' for respiratory and antiseptic use, including in oily nasal/throat preparations. Modern equivalents are used as inhalants and topical antiseptics under the same cautions as the crude oil.

Traditional decoction / poultice

Parts: leaves, bark

Kanak (New Caledonian) and Australian Aboriginal peoples traditionally used leaf decoctions and poultices for fever, wounds, aches and respiratory complaints. Such traditional external preparations are milder than the concentrated essential oil.

Pre-colonial traditional use
Indigenous peoples of northern Australia, New Guinea and New Caledonia used the paperbark's leaves (decoctions, poultices, inhaled crushed leaves) and bark for fever, wounds, aches and respiratory infection, regarding the tree as a near 'cure-all'.

Gomenol / 'oil of Gomen' commercial and medical history, New Caledonia

Late 19th century (product registered 1892)
Distillation of niaouli near the port of Gomen gave rise to the trademarked medicinal oil 'Gomenol' (registered by industrialist Jules Prévet in 1892), which popularised niaouli oil in Europe as a respiratory antiseptic and wound cleanser.
