Western Herbalism Properties

Actions:
anti-inflammatory

Traditional Uses

In Brazilian folk medicine of the Cerrado, alcoholic macerates and decoctions of the leaves and flowering tops of Lychnophora ericoides are applied topically as bath, compress and liniment to treat bruises, sprains, contusions and muscular pain, substituting for European Arnica montana (Mors, Rizzini & Pereira, 2000). Pharmacological studies attribute the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity to species-specific sesquiterpene lactones (notably lychnopholide and goyazensolide) and flavonoids (Guzzo et al.; Bohlmann et al.).

Botanical Description

Lychnophora ericoides Mart. (Asteraceae), known in Brazil as 'arnica-da-serra', 'arnica brasileira' or 'falsa arnica', is an aromatic subshrub or shrub 0.5–2 m tall endemic to rocky campos rupestres of the Cerrado biome on quartzitic outcrops of central Brazil (Minas Gerais, Goiás, Bahia). The much-branched woody stems bear crowded, needle-like to linear leaves 5–15 mm long with revolute margins and a dense whitish tomentum on the underside, giving the plant a heath-like (Erica-like) appearance. Small lavender to purple discoid flower heads are grouped in compact terminal glomerules surrounded by imbricate involucral bracts; flowering peaks in the dry season. The plant is heavily exploited and is protected by Brazilian legislation owing to threats from overharvest.
