Botanical Description

Lophatherum gracile is a slender, bamboo-like perennial grass of the family Poaceae, native to East and Southeast Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, India and Malesia. Despite its resemblance to small bamboo, it is a true grass, growing from short, knotty rhizomes that bear swollen, spindle-shaped root tubers. The erect, wiry culms reach up to about a metre and bear broadly lanceolate, distinctly veined leaves 5-20 cm long that taper to a fine point and have a short petiole-like base. The inflorescence is an open, narrow panicle of slender, awned spikelets. It grows in shaded forest understorey, on hill slopes and along moist banks, and is cultivated and gathered for use in traditional Chinese medicine.
