Traditional Uses

In Indian and Bangladeshi folk medicine the bark of Litsea monopetala is regarded as astringent and is applied externally to bruises and used internally for diarrhoea; leaf and root preparations are also used for skin complaints, rheumatic pain and as a fodder-galactagogue for livestock (Khare, 2007).

Botanical Description

Litsea monopetala is a small to medium-sized evergreen or semi-deciduous tree of the family Lauraceae, widely distributed from the Indian subcontinent through Myanmar, Bangladesh, southern China and into Southeast Asia. It typically reaches 8–18 m in height with a straight trunk and dark grey, slightly fissured bark. The leaves are alternate, broadly obovate to elliptic, leathery, with a rounded or shortly acuminate apex and a velvety rusty-tomentose underside when young. Small unisexual yellowish flowers are borne in axillary clusters of subsessile umbels; the species is dioecious. The fruit is an ovoid berry, black when ripe, seated on a shallowly cup-shaped receptacle. It grows in moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forest, and is widely used as fodder, fuelwood and a host for lac insects.
