Botanical Description

Lavandula dentata, known as French or fringed lavender, is an evergreen aromatic shrub of the Lamiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean basin (Spain, the Balearic Islands, North Africa) and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Plants form rounded bushes 60 to 100 centimetres tall and as broad, with slender woody stems that are square in cross-section and clothed in soft greyish-green foliage. The leaves are distinctive within the genus: opposite, narrowly linear-oblong, 2 to 4 centimetres long, with conspicuous rounded teeth along the margins (hence 'dentata'), and densely covered in short greyish hairs that release a pleasant rosemary-lavender fragrance when crushed. Flowering spikes are terminal, dense and short, 3 to 5 centimetres long, topped with a tuft of pale violet-purple sterile bracts; the small two-lipped flowers are pale lavender. Calyces and bracts are densely glandular-pubescent. It is widely grown ornamentally and harvested for essential oil.

Active Constituents

Linalool

Acyclic monoterpene alcohol

Concentration: ~45% of the essential oil (dominant constituent)

Linalool is the principal constituent of L. dentata oil and carries much of its sedative, anxiolytic, analgesic and antimicrobial activity; it is a mild skin sensitiser once oxidised.

Camphor

Bicyclic monoterpene ketone

Concentration: ~16% of the essential oil

The relatively high camphor content distinguishes L. dentata from true lavender (L. angustifolia). Camphor is counterirritant and antimicrobial but is neurotoxic in overdose and is the reason the oil should not be ingested or used on infants or people with epilepsy.

1,8-Cineole (eucalyptol)

Monoterpene oxide

Concentration: ~7% of the essential oil

1,8-Cineole gives the herb its eucalyptus/rosemary-like note and contributes expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.

Borneol

Bicyclic monoterpene alcohol

Concentration: ~8% of the essential oil

Borneol is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory and adds a camphoraceous, penetrating aroma.

γ-Terpineol

Monoterpene alcohol

Concentration: ~7% of the essential oil

Terpineol contributes antimicrobial activity and a soft floral-lilac odour.

Linalyl acetate

Monoterpene ester

Concentration: ~6% of the essential oil (much lower than in L. angustifolia)

Linalyl acetate is the sweet, fruity ester prized in fine lavender oil; its comparatively low level in L. dentata makes this species more herbaceous and camphoraceous and less suited to perfumery.

Thymol and phenolic/flavonoid fraction

Concentration: Thymol ~1-2%; rosmarinic acid and flavonoids in aqueous/alcoholic extracts

Thymol adds antimicrobial activity, while rosmarinic acid and flavonoids in polar extracts account for much of the plant's antioxidant capacity.

⚠ Drug Interactions

CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, sedatives, alcohol)

Minor Evidence: Theoretical

Linalool and linalyl acetate have documented sedative/anxiolytic activity in the Lavandula genus, so combined use with sedatives could theoretically add to drowsiness. This is extrapolated from lavender generally rather than shown specifically for L. dentata.

Clinical note: Relevant mainly to concentrated oral or aromatherapy use; no documented clinical interactions for L. dentata specifically.

Preparation Methods

Essential oil (steam-distilled, for aromatherapy/topical use)

Parts: Flowering tops, Leaf

The oil is distilled from the flowering aerial parts and used diluted (typically 1-3% in a carrier oil) for massage and inhalation. Because of its high camphor content it should not be taken internally, should be kept away from infants and young children, and is best avoided by people with epilepsy and during pregnancy.

Infusion / herbal tea

Parts: Flowers, Leaf

A light infusion of the dried flowers and toothed leaves is used traditionally in North Africa and Iberia as a calming, digestive and mildly antiseptic drink.

Dried herb and hydrosol (topical / cosmetic)

Parts: Flowering tops

Dried flowering tops are used in sachets and washes, and the distillation water (hydrosol) is applied as a gentle antiseptic skin tonic. Patch testing is advisable, as oxidised linalool can cause contact sensitisation.

Lavandula dentata L.: Phytochemical Analysis, Antioxidant, Antifungal and Insecticidal Activities of Its Essential Oil

El Abdali Y, Agour A, Allali A, Bourhia M, El Moussaoui A, Eloutassi N, Salamatullah AM, Alzahrani A, Ouahmane L, Aboul-Soud MAM, Giesy JP, Bouia A (2022) Plants (Basel) In vitro phytochemical and bioactivity study

GC-MS analysis of Moroccan L. dentata oil identified sixteen compounds dominated by linalool (45.06%), camphor (15.62%), borneol (8.28%) and 1,8-cineole (7.24%). The oil showed concentration-dependent DPPH antioxidant activity, marked antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi, and insecticidal activity, supporting its documented antimicrobial/biopesticidal potential.

North African and Andalusian traditional medicine

Medieval to present
Known in the Maghreb and Iberia (Spanish 'cantueso' / French 'lavande dentée'), L. dentata has long been used in Moroccan, Algerian and Spanish folk medicine as an infusion and wash for digestive complaints, nervous tension, colds and as an antiseptic and insect repellent.

Classical Greco-Roman lavender tradition (Dioscorides, 'stoechas')

1st century CE onward
Mediterranean lavenders (the stoechas group and their relatives, including toothed forms) were described by Dioscorides and later herbalists for chest complaints and as aromatic, warming remedies, a tradition that broadly encompassed the region's wild lavenders such as L. dentata.
