Western Herbalism Properties

Actions:
analgesicanti-inflammatory

Traditional Uses

In African ethnomedicine the trunk and stem bark of Hymenodictyon floribundum is widely used to treat fever, pain and inflammatory conditions; in Ghana the stem-bark and root-bark are taken for paralysis, epilepsy, convulsions and spasm, and in parts of Tanzania the stem bark is applied to diarrhoea and other complaints (Asase et al., 2010; Okoye et al., 2021). Species-specific in-vivo studies in rats confirm significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity and attribute it in part to the coumarin scopoletin isolated from the bark, supporting the assigned Western properties.

Botanical Description

Hymenodictyon floribundum is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Rubiaceae, typically 3 to 9 m tall, with a rounded crown and grey, rough, fissured bark. The large opposite leaves are broadly elliptic to ovate, up to about 20 cm long, with prominent veins and a softly hairy lower surface, often turning red before falling. Tiny greenish to cream flowers are crowded in slender pendulous spike-like racemes that hang gracefully from the branch tips, some lower flowers bearing an enlarged whitish leafy bract. The fruit is a small woody, ribbed capsule splitting to release numerous flat winged seeds adapted for wind dispersal. The species is widespread across savanna and rocky hill woodland of tropical and southern Africa, where it tolerates poor stony soils and seasonal drought, frequently growing among granite outcrops and on termite mounds.
